Archbishop Appeals for Prayers, Support for Burma

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba has called on people of faith in Southern Africa to offer their prayers and support to the people of Burma/Myanmar in the wake of a cyclone which has killed tens of thousands and left 1,5 million people seriously at risk.

Archbishop Thabo said in a letter to the Most Revd. Stephen Than Myint Oo, the Archbishop of Myanmar and Bishop of Yangon:

"I write to convey to you the heartfelt concern of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa at the desperate plight of the people of your church and country in the wake of Cyclone Nargis.

"At this time of devastation brought about by natural causes, we offer prayers to God for you and your people, and call upon all people of faith in Southern Africa to offer prayers and appropriate support.

"We also acknowledge the need for human rights to be respected in your country, and for the quick and effective distribution of aid to all who need it, no matter who they are or what their station.

"May God continue to bless you as you minister to His people at this difficult time."
