Diocese of Grahamstown

Consecration of Ebenezer St Mark Ntlali

as Bishop of Grahamstown, 20 September 2008

Cathedral of Ss Michael & George, Grahamstown

The Cathedral was packed, with 200 people following the service in the nearby City Hall via closed circuit TV.

The Cathedral choir was joined by visiting choirs, and other musical accompaniment included kudu horns, trumpets and drums, and the Cathedral marimba players who accompanied the Lumko setting of the Mass.

The preacher was the Revd Vicentia Kgaba from the Diocese of Johannesburg.

The Bishop-Elect stands with his presenting bishops, Jo Seoka of Pretoria (left) and David Beetge of the Highveld.

The Laying on of Hands. Colin Johnson, Bishop of Grahamstown’s Link Diocese, Toronto, Canada, is on the right. Bishop Colin brought a generous gift of R40,000 from his Diocese, for Training for Ministries.

The new Bishop of Grahamstown is introduced to his Diocese by the Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba (centre back), surrounded by his brother bishops.

Members of the congregation greet one another and the new Bishop, at the Peace. The pillars of the Cathedral are adorned with banners created at the Eastern Cape Keiskamma Project.

Among those who brought greetings was the Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University, Dr Saleem Badat, who reminded the congregation that their new Bishop is both an “illustrious graduate” of Rhodes and a member of the University Council.

The service concluded with Bishop Ebenezer blessing the city and Diocese.
