Say no to Xenophobia and Violence

Statement by Churches, University, NGOs and Residents of Makana, Grahamstown 28 May 2008

(Xhosa version of statement)

The fire of xenophobia is causing great suffering and threatens to destroy our humanity and the soul of our nation.

As churches and university, businesses and schools, NGOs and residents of Makana, we unite to express our deep concern, pain and grief at the suffering being caused by xenophobic attitudes and violence in some parts of our country.

We call on every resident of the Makana community not to act with anger and violence towards people from other countries. Let Makana be a community that shows to the rest of our country its compassion for and solidarity with all people.

We understand the pain, hunger and poverty of many in our community. But our frustration and anger should not be directed against fellow Africans from other countries. They are often refugees from oppression in their own countries and need our support and safety and shelter. We are all Africans and Africa is God’s creation. Neither frustration nor poverty can justify one person turning on another and raping, assaulting or killing them.

God calls us to love others as we love ourselves. To act in a way that celebrates that we are all made in God’s image. We must close our ears to words of hate and blame of fellow Africans from other countries for the suffering we may experience. Let us banish hatred and act with love and compassion for all who live here, whoever they may be.

The people of Makana have a proud history of struggle for freedom from apartheid violence, oppression and injustice. Let us hold firm to this great legacy and

§         REJECT HATRED AND INTOLERANCE OF PEOPLE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES

§         SAY NO TO VIOLENCE AGAINST OUR SISTERS AND BROTHERS FROM OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES

§         ACT TO UPHOLD AND PROTECT JUSTICE AND PEACE FOR ALL PEOPLE IN MAKANA.

§         DECLARE MAKANA BELONGS TO ALL WHO LIVE IN IT
