The new Diocese, inaugurated on 3 October 2009, was formed out of the two northern Archdeaconries of Grahamstown Diocese.
Archbishop Makgoba installed the Right Revd Mazwi Ernest Tisani as the first Bishop of Ukhahlamba, on 24 April 2010, in the newly-designated Cathedral of St Michael and All Angels, Queenstown.

The Archbishop unveiled the Foundation Stone and the crest of Ukhahlamba Diocese.

Vicar-General to oversee the process of summoning an Elective Assembly which
met on 21 January 2010 to elect the first Bishop of
Ukhahlamba, with the Revd Lawrence Nzwana (right) as the Bishop’s Vicar.
The newly-formed Ukhahlamba Diocesan Choir led the inspiring singing.
The 250-strong Servers’ Guild of the new diocese was represented by a large contingent of young people.
There was a dance offering by a traditional group.
After the service another group entertained the crowd while lunch was served.
